South African conference on NF

Experts and delegates from 19 African countries gathered in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, from 3 to 10 March 2012 to discuss ways of boosting natural fibre production in a bid to tackle rural poverty.

Mohair production:

South Africa produces around 54% of the world’s Mohair supply. Most of it comes from the Eastern Cape and ‘Cape Mohair’ is known to be the best quality in the world.        

The IYNF  declared by UN:

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has declared 2009 to be the International Year of Natural Fibres. South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, an organization that has a large stake in the country's budding natural fibre industry, is backing the initiative

Hemp composite:

Exploring hemp as an environmentally-friendly alternative for the use of glass fibres in engineering composites in South Africa

South Africa has taken initiative to use NF composites in automobile and construction sector.
